The chocolate Santa Claus has become indispensable in this country. A fixed Christmas inventory between “Last Christmas” on the radio, mulled wine at the Christmas market and an advent calendar on the wall.
How many copies do you think will be sold on German counters this year? 50 million? 100 million? No, believe it or not, there are a whopping 144 million Santa Clauses made of chocolate that the German confectionery industry sends into the Christmas race according to current projections by the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI). If this amount were consumed exclusively within the Federal Republic of Germany, this would be almost two chocolate Santa Clauses per German citizen. Fortunately, every third Santa Claus is exported, for example to Japan, where the Christmas hollow figures based on the European model are very popular.
The trend is now moving away from the cheap chocolate Santa Claus. More and more people are looking for sustainable – and vegan – alternatives.
