iChoc cocoa comes exclusively from 240 cocoa farmers \u2013 all of whom take part in the iChoc Farmer-To-Bar programme \u2013 on the so-called iChoc Route, a special cocoa-growing region in the municipality of Yamasa, in the heart of the Dominican Republic. Through our Farmer-to-Bar programme, we generate added value in this province via charitable projects, such as the construction of an aqueduct to supply the local community with clean drinking water.<\/p>\n

WHERE DOES COCOA COME FROM?<\/h2>\n

240 farmers harvest the cocoa pods for our iChoc chocolates on their fincas and take the beans to their designated collection point. There are 9 collection points along the iChoc route: La Cuaba, Arroyo Majagua, Los Caimitos, La Sabana, Los Caimitos I + II, Serralle, El Cuance, El Cerdadillo, Peralvillo and El Mogote. At the Yacao distribution centre in Yamasa, the cocoa beans are fermented, dried and weighed separately whilst dry. From Yamas\u00e1, the containers are transported to the port in the capital, Santo Domingo, where they are shipped in containers to Europe.<\/p>\n

At present, this is the best that can be done. However, the cooperatives are very large, and the individual who harvested the cocoa remains anonymous.<\/p>\n

At iChoc, we deliberately rely on a small group of cocoa suppliers. All are from the same region, in the immediate vicinity. All nine collection points in this region supply the FUNDOPO<\/strong><\/a> cocoa cooperative.
\nThanks to strong local partners \u2013 such as the cocoa processor and exporter Yacao<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 we are able to trace the entire value chain. A total of 240 cocoa-producing families harvest the cocoa that is processed into our iChoc chocolates. PROJECTS FOR THE COMMON GOOD<\/h2>\n

In close consultation with the local community, we carry out projects that benefit the common good. One such project is the current construction of a communal aqueduct to improve the drinking water supply along the Yamasa distribution centre. Designed as an elevated cistern, the aqueduct holds around 5,000 gallons (approx. 19,000 litres) of water. This enables 39 farming families along the iChoc Cocoa Route, as well as 10 other families not involved in the cocoa sector, to be supplied with water.<\/p>\n
